High-energy costs are a drag on the bottom lines of wastewater service providers, and many service providers are looking for ways to become more efficient.

The 2015 US Water Industry report reveals an interesting conflict. While providers may be confident new technologies can cut energy expenses, utility executives are skeptical because of the upfront costs. They also fear the new equipment or technology won’t integrate well with their existing systems.

Most of our survey respondents say innovative technology is necessary to achieving a utility’s long-term goals.

But familiar obstacles are in the way: not enough money, a lack of understanding of the technology, and a feeling that such upgrades lack support at the utility’s highest levels.

Fortunately, savings are possible in multiple ways.

For most treatment plants, blowers are the biggest energy expense. Advances in aeration blower technology can reduce the amount of energy required to run the blower system.

Replacing aging control valves with new technology valves can return their investment costs within five years in some cases.

Energy recovery from wastewater is another opportunity. Wastewater holds up to five times the energy required to treat it, yet many utilities report having no extraction plans.

The technologies are there to deliver strong long-term returns on these investments and we believe they can help a provider reduce energy costs.
